Broken swans need to be made because it a representation of the modern struggles faced by many women exploring their sexuality. It is relevant and covers many subjects that plague young women exploring sex and pleasure for the first time. This series is focused on the exploration of gender politics and sexual rights of women in modern societies. A bid for sexual freedom and equality in communities where women haven’t been able to openly navigate and express their sexuality in the same way that men have.

Synopsis

CENTRAL IDEA

The central idea that we are exploring within our telenovela is informed by the inequality and unimportance of women’s sexual rights all over the world, but more specifically in African societies. Patriarchal structures were put into place to oppress and destroy women while normalising violence and toxicity in men with the frequent use of statements such as “boys will be boys”, encouraging lenience and acceptance towards even the most heinous actions. Highlighting the difference in which boys are socialised into men and girls into women, building foundations for gender inequality and limiting sexual freedom for women and the LGBTQI+ community. The characters of Broken Swans are manifestations of contemporary societal evils, which impact how people identify and behave and are in sync with societal aspirations and basic urge of humanity to belong and reach our full potential. As social dynamics have long regulated the content of television making, serving as more than a visual treat but an account of societal, economic and political set up in which people are living. This can help our audience to better understand their own lives,  and even how our communities operate.
